We live in a world where it seems like everybody either wants to be unique — or they want to imitate some old-fashioned standard. At RBM Lumber we cater to both extremes of desire.
Actually being different is what RBM Lumber is all about. We adapt to the changing tastes and desires of our customers which is why we have such a wide selection of products and textures to choose from. And yet we also value the best and oldest traditions of wood as a source of strength and beauty in construction and decoration. The following is a list and description of textures we offer.
- Smooth is what you expected to see 40 years ago. Good to the touch, and it shows off all the natural character of the wood.
- Circular Sawn has the marks of a circular saw blade which is an imitation of what most lumber was cut with in the early years of sawmilling. There are a few small mills left that cut with this type of saw but it has its drawbacks. The target is usually old fashioned and rustic.
- Wire Brushed has a unique appearance where some of the softer wood of the annual growth ring is removed causing the grain to be more pronounced especially when stained. The glory of this texture is it looks fabulous in any décor whether elegant, rustic or contemporary.
- Band Sawn is unique in that its marks are perpendicular to the line of the board. It also has a more rustic feel.
- Skip Sanded - We take the circle saw texture and run it through the finish sander and lightly sand off the high parts of the texture. This creates an appearance of being worn; almost an antique look like it has many years of use.
- Circle Saw/Wire Brushed - We run the circle saw texture through the wire brush machine which softens the circle saw texture and brings out the grain when it is stained.
One of the advantages of a textured product, especially a floor, is that it is much easier to finish because you don’t have to try to sand out all the scratches or level the boards. Any texture on a product will be greatly enhanced with a stain. RBM’s variety of textures is not unique in itself but where we stand out is our ability to apply them to so many different products at your request. Recently, textured flooring has become much more popular than smooth. Textured trim has also become very popular. Texturing different products gives you the ability to create contrast without going to the extent of completely changing the wood species. For example it is very common to lay a circular sawn floor and then use a wire brushed trim. This way the trim looks just a little bit proud of the floor. We can also put your desired texture on your T&G ceiling, soffit or wall. So as you design your décor let your imagination run wild with all the possibilities you’ll find at RBM Lumber!!!
